Paint is the liquid, liquefiable, or mastic composition that converts to a solid film after application to a substrate in a thin layer. There are basically two types of paint: acrylic latex paint, often simply called latex paint, and oil-based, or alkyd paint. Latex paint is easier to work with and dries more quickly. Latex is good for general painting projects such as walls and ceilings. Oil-based paint is more durable, but it takes longer to dry. Oil-based paint is good for trim work because trim takes more abuse over time than do walls. Enamel paint is a high-gloss oil-based paint that is typically used on hard, non-porous surfaces such as metal. Enamels are typically used for rooms that require more upkeep, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
