Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.As a serological technique, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are sensitive, specific, and inexpensive. Since its first introduction to the study of plant viruses in the 1970s, ELISA has become a widely used laboratory method for screening of viruses in various samples. Based on the major principle that enzyme-induced color reaction produced by antigen–antibody interactions, ELISA has permitted the sensitive and selective quantitative/qualitative analysis of antibodies, antigens, proteins and glycoproteins in biological samples. Nowadays, various procedures in ELISA have been developed. According to how the analytes and antibodies are bonded and used, these ELISA tests can be generally categorized into four types, including direct, sandwich, competitive and reverse ELISA. For virus detection, ELISA is a well-established tool that achieves measurement through direct detection of specific viral antigens, or indirectly screening for antibodies produced by the body in response to the infection.
